Technology startup debuts social media applications designed to help nonprofits connect to their supporters

February 23, 2010

The nonprofit sector, in an effort to adapt to the changing donor landscape, is embracing social media and all it has to offer. But the question remains,”What happens after you create your Facebook age, launch your blog, and Tweet about doing it?”

Just because you’ve built it, doesn’t mean they’ll come – and this has some nonprofits asking “Now what?” while others debate if they should even continue with their social media presence.

“The challenge for many nonprofits is that their internal resources are constrained as it is – entering a whole new medium for fundraising and advocacy can seem daunting,” says Bret Waters, CEO and Founder of Tivix Inc.

Tivix, a new online software company, has developed a complete set of solutions to help nonprofit organizations fundraise and build their supporter base – more effectively, efficiently, and with greater impact. Their fully customizable applications run within the Facebook environment and features strong, direct calls-to-action including “Support Us,” “Donate4Good,” and “Shop4Good.” The application resides prominently as a tab at the top of the organization’s Facebook page and offers supporters the ability to share with their social network.

One of the unique aspects of Tivix applications is that they can also be incorporated into a nonprofits’ existing website, giving organizations the benefits of social media and the open web as well.

Social media networks represent both a tremendous opportunity for nonprofits, and a huge challenge. The inherent viral nature of social media is hard to dismiss or resist – for every supporter you attract on Facebook, you’re visible, on average, to 130 other people. Facebook boasts over 400 million active users who spend almost an hour on the site daily. US based users comprise almost 103 million 25.7%) and a staggering 65 million (63.3%) of those are adults 25+.

“Today you can’t ignore the importance of social networking in marketing. Tivix has been instrumental in generating both visibility and revenue for us through Facebook, while staying within our tight budget,” says Bill Schwartz, Executive Producer of the San Francisco Theater Festival.

Tivix met the Environmental Defense Fund’s goal of awareness and fundraising with their custom branded Support Us application as well as their Shop4Good application which tapped into consumer preferences for socially conscious brands (donating to a charity or a cause topped the list for what made a socially conscious brand). “We’re much more socially conscious and socially aware than we ever have been; we all want to change in the world in some way. Tivix gives organizations and individuals the tools to do that,” says Waters.
